Stomach pushing up through the diaphragm
A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach bulges through the large muscle separating the abdomen and chest (diaphragm). The diaphragm has a small opening (hiatus) through which the food tube (esophagus) passes before connecting to the stomach.
When the stomach pushes up through this opening into the chest cavity, a hiatal hernia develops. This condition is particularly common in people over 50 years of age.
Laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair involves pulling the stomach back into the abdomen and tightening the diaphragmatic opening. This is often combined with fundoplication to prevent acid reflux.
