What is Incisional Hernia?
An incisional hernia occurs when tissue protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal wall at the site of a previous surgical incision. This type of hernia develops when the surgical wound does not heal completely, leaving a weak area in the abdominal muscles.
Incisional hernias can occur months or even years after surgery and are more likely after emergency surgeries, wound infections, or in patients with risk factors like obesity and diabetes.
Risk Factors
- Obesity
- Post-surgical wound infection
- Age over 60
- Chronic coughing
- Heavy lifting during recovery
- Conditions that affect wound healing (diabetes, smoking)
Symptoms
- Bulge at or near a previous surgical scar
- Pain or discomfort
- Feeling of pressure or weakness
- Constipation
Treatment
Laparoscopic incisional hernia repair with mesh placement is the preferred treatment. This approach provides durable reinforcement and reduces the risk of recurrence.
