A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. The diaphragm has a small opening (hiatus) through which the food tube (esophagus) passes before connecting to the stomach. When the stomach pushes up through this opening, a hiatal hernia develops.
Diagnosis typically involves endoscopy, barium swallow X-ray, or esophageal manometry to evaluate the hernia and any associated reflux.
Laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair involves pulling the stomach back into the abdomen and tightening the diaphragmatic opening. This is often combined with fundoplication (wrapping the top of the stomach around the esophagus) to prevent acid reflux.
Most patients stay 1-2 days in hospital. A special liquid diet is followed initially. Full recovery in 2-4 weeks.
Dr. Raman Garg has specialized training in laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair and fundoplication, providing effective relief from reflux symptoms.
